Description
The Blue Poison Dart Frog (Dendrobates tinctorius “Azureus”) is a striking terrestrial species known for its vivid blue coloration and bold black spotting. Native to the Sipaliwini region of Suriname, this frog inhabits humid tropical rainforest environments where it thrives among leaf litter and dense vegetation. Despite its intense coloration, captive-bred individuals are non-toxic and highly sought after in the hobby for their hardy nature and active behavior. This species does best in well-planted, high-humidity enclosures that replicate its natural forest floor habitat.
Care Notes
Keep between 70°F and 78°F. They are extremely sensitive to heat and can easily stress or die if temperatures exceed 80°F. Keep them out of direct sunlight. Maintain a constant relative humidity between 70% and 100%. This usually requires using an automatic misting system or fogger, combined with a glass top, to mist the tank two to three times a day. They must be fed small, live insects. The staple diet should be wingless/flightless fruit flies (Drosophila melanogaster and Drosophila hydei), supplemented with springtails, isopods, and bean beetles. Frequency & Supplements: Feed juvenile frogs daily, and adult frogs 3–4 times a week. Dust all feeder insects with a high-quality calcium powder at every feeding, and a multivitamin powder (including Vitamin A and D3) 1–2 times a week to prevent nutritional deficiencies.
